Obviously check if the lens is cap is off. Underneath the viewfinder there should be a little switch with you can use to adjust the viewfinder focus, try adjusting it. Go into the camera settings and turn off the fade in function (to black or white), and check that the camera is set to automatic, there might be problems with the manual settings.
